About Campos Amazônicos National Park

Campos Amazônicos National Park spans approximately 961,300 hectares across the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, and Acre. Established in 2006, it is notable for its unusual ecosystem: a patch of cerrado (savanna) vegetation surrounded by the dense Amazon rainforest. This unique combination creates a mosaic of habitats supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna, including many species endemic to the cerrado and some threatened Amazonian wildlife. The park's terrain is mainly composed of rolling plateaus and low mountains interspersed with rivers and streams that contribute to the Amazon basin. Due to its remote location, it offers an off-the-beaten-path experience for adventurous travelers interested in ecology, photography, and hiking. Visitors can explore the distinctive plant species, birdwatch for endemic and migratory birds, and witness rare mammals such as jaguars and giant anteaters. Due to conservation priorities and limited infrastructure, recreational opportunities are typically low-impact and guided, emphasizing environmental education and scientific research. The park serves as a crucial conservation area protecting the transition zone between cerrado and Amazon rainforest ecosystems, safeguarding biodiversity and hydrological cycles vital to the region.
